Cultural Agility & Adaptability – How Organisations can Transform to Seize Real Opportunity from Accelerating Change

The transformation of organisational culture and vision is a journey requiring patience, strategic agility and adaptability.

Adopting a dual-structure approach, integrating hierarchical stability with creative, network-driven innovation, demands significant time investment.

And yet, this high-performance structure and culture can transform the capabilities of organisations who now only operate with the “traditional” and significantly less nimble hierarchical model.

Studies indicate that cultivating an adaptive, agile culture can span 4-10 years, to be fully integrated into the organisational DNA. So the time to start is now!

Crucially, the process begins with a shift in behaviours in a small group of people, setting the foundation for deeper cultural evolution.

A prevalent challenge in this journey is the tendency towards short-termism.

Since the ‘80s, businesses practices, as highlighted by the Business Roundtable (BRT) are frequently fixated on quarterly metrics at the expense of long-term stakeholder interests.

In a pivotal statement in August 2019, the BRT called for a shift away from the myopic “maximise shareholder return” model towards a more holistic, and longer-term, multi-stakeholder perspective.

This approach (despite facing criticism) aligns with findings from the “Corporate Culture and Performance” (Kotter & Heskett) studies, suggesting that the most economically successful firms have managed to balance short-term demands with long-term stakeholder value.

This organisational agility and balance is not just an urgent strategic imperative but a cultural one, reshaping the way businesses define and pursue success in the Age of Acceleration.
